Birnessite is a layered manganese oxide mineral with ~7 Å of d-spacing. Because of its high cation exchange capacity, birnessite greatly impacts the chemical compositions of ground water and fluids in sediment pores. Understanding the cation exchange mechanisms requires atomistic investigations of the crystal structures and coordination environments of hydrated cations in the interlayer. In this study, we conducted classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, an atomistic simulation method of computational mineralogy, for triclinic Na-birnessite and K-birnessite whose chemical formula are from previous experiments. We report our MD simulation results of the crystal structures, coordination environments of Na⁺ and K⁺, and the polytypes of birnessite and compare them with available experimental results. The simulation results well reproduced experimental lattice parameters and provided atomic level information for the interlayer cation and water molecule sites that are difficult to distinguish in X-ray experiments. We also report that the polytype of the Mn octahedral sheets is identical between Na- and K-birnessite, but the cation positions differ from each other, demonstrating a correlation between the coordination environment of the interlayer cations and the crystal lattice parameters. This study shows that MD simulations are very promising in elucidating ion exchange reactions of birnessite.

Mineral and geochemical analysis were conducted on two sections (~3.5 m) of red-brown claysilt sediments covering the gneiss and granite weathering zones in Suwon-si for establishing Quaternary paleoenvironmental changes in Korea. The sections were divided into four sedimentary layers (Unit 1-4) by vertical changes in mineral composition and chemical composition. The lowermost unit 1 was a sandy sediment with a high K-feldspar content with a significant contribution of weathered bedrock. Unit 2 was a transition layer showing intermediate characteristics. Unit 3 was a reddish brown clay-silt sediment, with a total clay content of 58% on average, and the main clay minerals were illite-smectite mixed layer minerals and hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite/smectite. Unit 3 contained almost no plagioclase, while the content of kaolin minerals derived by the plagioclase weathering was higher than in the other layers. Unit 4 had similar mineral composition and chemical properties to Unit 3, but had a higher content of plagioclase and chlorite and lower content of kaolin minerals. The chemical compositions of the sections were compared with those in other regions of Korea, suggesting the eolian origin of Units 3 and 4. The paleoenvironmental change in the sedimentary section of this region was interpreted as follows. Weathered products of gneiss and granite, which are bedrocks of this region, were eroded and deposited as sandy sediments in the periphery to form the lower layers (Unit 1, 2), followed by the deposition of the claysilty rich eolian sediments (Unit 3) during the glacial. Unit 3 was chemically weathered during the warm humid climate during the last interglacial, developing a reddish brown color. After that, a eolian sediment layer (Unit 4) was deposited during the last glacial.

The activity of living microorganism directly or indirectly affects to the biomineralization in sediments and rocks that display the unique biotic structure. Minerals in the biotic structures showed unique properties and bypass the thermodynamic and kinetic barriers. Therefore, investigations on the biotically induced microstructure is essential to identify the new mineral formation mechanism by analyzing crystal structures and morphology at a nano-scale. The significant implication as well as advantages of using scanning electron microscopy to characterize the biotic structures were discussed in this paper for the examples of hydrothermal vent area microbial mat and deep-sea ferromanganese crust sample.

There have rarely been performed for the clay mineralogy of the East Sea sediments except for few studies about paleoenvironmental aspect. This study inferred the provenance of sediments based on the clay mineral characteristics and distribution pattern for the 120 sediment samples collected by the box corer from the Gangneung-Donghae area between 2017-2019. The relative proportions of the four major clay minerals are abundant in the order of illite, chlorite, kaolinite, and smectite. The continental shelf sediments below water depth 150 m have more chlorite and kaolinite content and better illite crystallinity, but less illite and smectite content, and S/I index than those of continental slope sediments. Clay mineral composition of the continental shelf sediments are influenced by the adjacent continental geology, because north site (Gangneung area) has more chlorite but south site (Donghae area) has more kaolinite. These characteristics and distribution pattern of clay minerals indicate that the provenance of sediments are different between continental shelf and continental slop. The continental shelf sediments may be introduced the study area by the adjacent small rivers whereas the continental slope sediment might be supplied by current from the south of the study area.

Abstract: There have been many studies on the calcination of oyster shells in the perspective of recycling of resources. The quicklime made by the calcination of oyster shells is used either as it is or after reacting with water to transform to liquid lime before being used. However, the liquid lime made from calcined oyster shells show slightly different properties from that of limestone. In this study, to compare these properties of oyster shell with those of limestone, the samples were calcined and reacted with water at various temperatures to transform to a liquid lime and filtered using 150 μm sieves to calculate the transform rate to liquid lime. The calcined limestone was transformed to liquid lime at all temperatures, but calcined oyster shell did not show any transformation at 30℃ and 50℃ under the experimental conditions of this study, and rather increased the weight for the remaining after filtration due to the presence of Ca(OH)₂ produced by the reaction with water, Even at 90℃, the transformation rate of calcined oyster shell to liquid lime was lower than that of limestone. This difference in oyster shell can be explained partly by the preventing calcined one from reacting with water by conchiolin which is protein found in the prismatic and pearl layers of oyster shell. Conchiolin is also known to be stable and does not decompose even at high temperature. However, even the calcined chalk layer without conchiolin shows lower transformation rate than that of calcined limestone, probably due to the small amount of Na in oyster shell, which may cause additional reaction including eutectic melt during calcination process.

The Samgwang Au-Ag deposit has been one of the largest deposits in Korea. The deposit consists of eight lens-shaped quartz veins which filled fractures along fault zones in Precambrian metasedimentary rock, which feature suggest that it is an orogenic-type deposit. The Ti-bearing minerals occur in wallrock (titanite, ilmenite and rutile) and laminated quartz vein (rutile). They occur minerals including biotite, muscovite, chlorite, white mica, monazite, zircon, apatite in wallrock and white mica, chlorite, arsenopyrite in laminated quartz vein. Chemical composition of titanite has maximum vaules of 3.94 wt.% (Al₂O₃), 0.49 wt.% (FeO), 0.52 wt.% (Nb₂O₅), 0.46 wt.% (Y₂O₃) and 0.43 wt.% (V₂O₅). Titanite with 0.06∼0.14 (Fe/Al ratio) and 0.06∼0.15 (X_Al (=Al/Al+Fe³⁺+Ti)) corresponds with metamorphic origin and low-Al variety. Chemical composition of ilmenite has maximum values of 0.07 wt.% (ZrO₂), 0.12 wt.% (HfO₂), 0.26 wt.% (Nb₂O₅), 0.04 wt.% (Sb₂O₅), 0.13 wt.% (Ta₂O₅), 2.62 wt.% (As₂O₅), 0.29 wt.% (V₂O₅), 0.12 wt.% (Al₂O₃) and 1.59 wt.% (ZnO). Chemical composition of rutile in wallrock and laminated quartz vein has maximum values of 0.35 wt.%, 0.65 wt.% (HfO₂), 2.52 wt.%, 0.19 wt.% (WO₃), 1.28 wt.%, 1.71 wt.% (Nb₂O₃), 0.03 wt.%, 0.07 wt.% (Sb₂O₃), 0.28 wt.%, 0.21 wt.% (As₂O₅), 0.68 wt.%, 0.70 wt.% (V₂O₃), 0.48 wt.%, 0.59 wt.% (Cr₂O₃), 0.70 wt.%, 1.90 wt.% (Al₂O₃) and 4.76 wt.%, 3.17 wt.% (FeO), respectively. Rutile in laminated quartz vein is higher contents (HfO₂, Nb₂O₃, As₂O₅, Cr₂O₃, Al₂O₃ and FeO) and lower content (WO₃) than rutile in wallrock. The substitutions of rutile in wallrock and laminated quatz vein are as followed : rutile in wallrock [(Fe³⁺, Al³⁺, Cr³⁺) + Hf⁴⁺+ (W⁵⁺, As⁵⁺, Nb⁵⁺) ← → 2Ti⁴⁺ + V⁴⁺, 2Fe²⁺ + (Al³⁺, Cr³⁺) + Hf⁴⁺ + (W⁵⁺, As⁵⁺, Nb⁵⁺) ←→ 2Ti⁴⁺ + 2V⁴⁺], rutile in laminated quartz vein [(Fe³⁺, Al³⁺) + As⁵⁺ ←→ Ti⁴⁺ + V⁴⁺, (Fe³⁺, Al³⁺) + As⁵⁺ ←→ Ti⁴⁺ + Hf ⁴⁺, 4(Fe³⁺, Al³⁺) ←→ Ti⁴⁺ + (W⁵⁺, Nb⁵⁺) + Cr³⁺], respectively. Based on these data, titanite, ilmenite and rutile in wallrock were formed by resolution and reconcentration of cations (W⁵⁺, Nb⁵⁺, As⁵⁺, Hf ⁴⁺, V⁴⁺, Cr³⁺, Al³⁺, Fe³⁺, Fe²⁺) in minerals of wallrock during regional metamorphism. And then rutile in laminated quartz vein was formed by reconcentration of cations (Nb⁵⁺, As⁵⁺, Hf⁴⁺, Cr³⁺, Al³⁺, Fe³⁺, Fe²⁺) in alteration minerals (white mica, chlorite) and Ti-bearing minerals reaction between hydrothermal fluid originated during ductile shear and Ti-bearing minerals (titanite, ilmenite and rutile) in wallrock.

The study area of Nokjeonri in Yeongwol belongs to the Taebaeksan Mineralized District. Ca and Mg skarn and related ore mineralization are developed in the Pungchon formation along the contact with the Imog granite. Ca skarn hosted in limestone mostly comprises garnet and pyroxene. Mg skarn developed in dolomite includes olivine and serpentine. Magnetite-hematite and pyrrhotite(±scheelite)-pyritegalena- sphalerite were mineralized during early and late stage, respectively. Garnet compositions are dominated by andradite series in proximal area and grossular series in distal area. Pyroxene compositions correspond to diopside series in majority. These compositional changes indicate that the fluids varied from oxidizing condition to reducing condition due to increased reaction with carbonated wall rocks as the fluids moved from the granite to a distal place. Fe₂O₃ and MgO concentrations of magnetite are higher in Mg skarn than those in Ca skarn, while FeO shows opposite trend. The Zn/Fe ratio of sphalerite increases with distance from the Imog granite. The δ³⁴S values of sulfide minerals are similar to those of the Imog granite, indicating magmatic origin in ore sulfur. Mineralization was established in the order of skarn, oxide and sulfide minerals with decreasing temperature and oxygen fugacity and increasing sulfur fugacity.

As studies and developments of nano-material increase, the release of the nano-sized material to water environment increase. Especially, silver nanoparticles have been found as dissolved and particulate state since nano-silver particle have been intensively used in industrial and our living environment due to the anti-bacterial effect of the nano-particles. The silver nano-particles and silver ion gives adverse effect on ecology and US-EPA set a secondary drinking water standards as 0.1 mg/L. Current study focused on the analysis of silver in groundwater, small scale water supply systems in Gyeongbook area. The results have been compared with the secondary drinking water standards and discussed at the point of characteristics of the local area and purpose of use of the water sample. Among the total of 298 samples, 2 samples exceed the secondary drinking water standards of EPA, 0.64% rate. Community drinking water and simplified water service showed relatively high detection rate and groundwater gave relatively higher concentration of silver indicating anthropogenic source and natural source could contribute simultaneously on groundwater.

The purpose of this study is to find out the possibility of applying microwave-hypochlorous acid leaching to effectively leaching Au in hydrothermal minerals on board. The comparative leaching experiment were confirmed that the leaching rate of Au with(T1)/with out(T2) of microwave nitric acid leaching. In addition, the leaching rate of Au on the conventional leaching by mechanical agitation(T3) and microwave leaching was compared. The result of microwave nitric acid leaching(solid-liquid ratio; 10%, leaching temperature; 90 oC, leaching time; 20 min) confined that the metal leaching rate was high in the order of As>Pb>Cu>Fe>Zn, and the content of Au in the leaching residue was increased from 33.77 g/ton to 60.02 g/ton. As a result of the comparative leaching experiment using a chloride solvent, the dissolution rate of Au was high in the order of T1(61.10%)>T3(53.30%)>T2(17.30%). Therefore, chloride, which can be manufactured using seawater and that can be recycled by collecting chlorine gas generated in the leaching process, is expected to be an optimal solvent for Au leaching. In addition, the application of microwaves is believed to be effective in terms of time, efficiency and energy.

Single crystal of fully dehydrated and partially Ca²⁺-exchanged zeolites A (|Ca₄Na₄|[Si₁₂Al₁₂O₄₈]- LTA) was brought into contact with Se in fine pyrex capillary at 523 K for 5 days. Crystal structure of Se-sorbed |Ca₄Na₄|[Si₁₂Al₁₂O₄₈]-LTA has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques at 294 K in the cubic space group Pm□m (a = 12.2787(13) Å). The crystal structure of yellow |Ca₄Na₄Se₄|[Si₁₂Al₁₂O₄₈]-LTA has been refined to the final error indices of R₁/wR₂ = 0.0960/0.3483 with 327 reflections for which F_o > 4s(F_o). In this structure, 4 Na⁺ and 4 Ca²⁺ ions fill every 6-ring site: These ions are all found at three crystallographic positions, on 3-fold axes equipoints of opposite 6-rings. Selenium atoms are found at three crystallographically distinct positions: 2 Se atoms per unit cell at Se(1) are located opposite 6-rings in the sodalite cavity (Se(1)-Na(1) = 2.53(5) Å) and 1 at Se(2) opposite 4- rings (Se(2)-O(1) = 2.76(10) Å) and 1 at Se(3) opposite 6-rings in the large cavity (Se(3)-Na(1) = 2.48(5) Å). Two molecular of Se₂ (Se(1)-Se(1) = 2.37(7) or 2.90(8) A and Se(2)-Se(3) = 2.91(5) ) Å) are found in all sodalite cavity and large cavity. Other clusters such as Se₄ and Se₈ could be existed in large cavity. The inter-selenium distances turned out to be longer that of gases Se₂ molecule.

The seismic properties in the crust are affected by the lattice preferred orientation(LPO) of major minerals in the crust. Therefore, in order to understand the internal structure of the crust using seismic data, information on the LPO of the major constituent minerals and the seismic properties of major rocks in a specific region are needed. However, there is little research on the LPOs of minerals in the crust in Korea. In this study, we collected amphibolites from two outcrops in Wigokri, Gapyeong, located in the nothern portion of Gyeonggi Massif, and we measured the LPOs of major minerals of amphibolite, especially amphibole and plagioclase through EBSD analysis, and calculated seismic properties of amphibolite. Two types of LPOs of amphibole, which are defined as type I and type IV, were observed in the two outcrops of Gapyeong amphibolites, respectively. In the case of amphibolites with the type I LPO of amphibole, large seismic anisotropy of both P- and S-wave was observed, while in the amphibolites with the type IV LPO of amphibole, small seismic anisotropy was observed. This is consistent with previous experimental results. The polarization direction of the fast S-wave was aligned subparallel to the lineation regardless of the LPO types of amphibole. The seismic anisotropy observed in Gapyeong is expected to be helpful to interpret the structure and seismic data within the crust in Gyeonggi Massif.

The strength characteristics of the three orthogonal splitting planes, known as rift, grain and hardway planes in granite quarries, were examined. R, G and H specimens were obtained from the block samples of Jurassic granites in Geochang and Hapcheon areas. The directions of the long axes of these three specimens are perpendicular to each of the three planes. First, The chart, showing the scaling characteristics of three graphs related to the uniaxial compressive strengths of R, G and H specimens, were made. The graphs for the three specimens, along with the increase of strength, are arranged in the order of H < G < R. The angles of inclination of the graphs for the three specimens, suggesting the degree of uniformity of the texture within the specimen, were compared. The above angles for H specimens(θ^H, 24.0°~37.3°) are the lowest among the three specimens. Second, the scaling characteristics related to the three graphs of RG, GH and RH specimens, representing a combination of the mean compressive strengths of the two specimens, were derived. These three graphs, taking the various N-shaped forms, are arranged in the order of GH < RH < RG. Third, the correlation chart between the strength difference(Δσ_t) and the angle of inclination(θ) was made. The above two parameters show the correlation of the exponential function with an exponent(λ) of -0.003. In both granites, the angle of inclination(θ^RH) of the RH-graph is the lowest. Fourth, the six types of charts, showing the correlations among the three kinds of compressive strengths for the three specimens and the five parameters for the two sets of microcracks aligned parallel to the compressive load applied to each specimen, were made. From these charts for Geochang and Hapcheon granites, the mean value(0.877) of the correlation coefficients(R²) for total density(Lt), along with the frequency(N, 0.872) and density(ρ, 0.874), is the highest. In addition, the mean values(0.829) of correlation coefficients associated with the mean compressive strengths are more higher than the minimum(0.768) and maximum(0.804) compression strengths of three specimens. Fifth, the distributional characteristics of the Brazilian tensile strengths measured in directions parallel to the above two sets of microcracks in the three specimens from Geochang granite were derived. From the related chart, the three graphs for these tensile strengths corresponding to the R, G and H specimens show an order of H(R1+G1) < G(R2+H1) < R(R1+G1). The order of arrangement of the three graphs for the tensile strengths and that for the compressive strengths are mutually consistent. Therefore, the compressive strengths of the three specimens are proportional to the three types of tensile strengths. Sixth, the values of correlation coefficients, among the three tensile strengths corresponding to each cumulative number(N=1~10) from the above three graphs and the five parameters corresponding to each graph, were derived. The mean values of correlation coefficients for each parameter from the 10 correlation charts increase in the order of density(0.763) < total length(0.817) < frequency(0.839) < mean length(Lm, 0.901) ≤ median length(Lmed, 0.903). Seventh, the correlation charts among the compressive strengths and tensile strengths for the three specimens were made. The above correlation charts were divided into nine types based on the three kinds of compressive strengths and the five groups(A~E) of tensile strengths. From the related charts, as the tensile strength increases with the mean and maximum compressive strengths excluding the minimum compressive strength, the value of correlation coefficient increases rapidly.

An eruption of Taal Volcano in the Philippines began on January 12, 2020. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) subsequently issued an Alert Level 4, indicating that “a hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days.” It was a phreatic eruption and phreatomagmatic eruption from the main crater that spewed ashes to Calabarzon, Metro Manila, some parts of Central Luzon, and Pangasinan in Ilocos Region, resulting in the suspension of classes, work schedules, and flights. By January 26, 2020, PHIVOLCS observed inconsistent, but decreasing volcanic activity in Taal, prompting the agency to downgrade its warning to Alert Level 3. After February 14, Alert status was set to Level 2 because of overall decreasing trend of volcanic activities, but it does not mean that the threat of an eruption has disappeared. In addition, the Alert Level can be raised to Alert Level 3 if there is a symptom of increasing unrest at any time.
