The surface microtopography of pyrophyllite collected from the Gussi deposit, Korea was observed by mean of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with the gold decoration technique. As results, closed step patterns with malformed circular islands were characteristically observed on the (001) surface of pyrophyllite, contrasting with spiral step patterns common in illite and kaolinite. Gussi pyrophyllite was likely crystallized from hydrothermal solution of higher temperature and/or higher supersaturation than those of other clay minerals. Comparing with micro-topographies of pyrophyllite from the Shokozan and the Uku deposits, southwest Japan, growth mechanism of Gussi pyrophyllite is almost equivalent to those from the Shokozan and the Uku deposits.

Carbonate minerals are examined by cathodoluminescence microscopy and chemical analysis to characterize the carbonate materials occurring in the Tertiary marine basin. The microscopic technique with cathodoluminescence gives new informations that are not obtainable by conventional microscopic techniques. The carbonate cements in sandstones appear to be uniform with transmitted light or with crossed prisms, but the inspection with cathololuminescence reveals foraminiferal tests and rhomb crystals in the carbonate cements. The chemical analysis indicates that the intense luminescence depends mainly on the presence of Mn^(2+) and Fe^(2+) as activator ions, but the Fe^(2-) also acts as an important quencher ion when Fe concentration in dolomite is over 10,000 ppm. The dolomites, which are rich in calcium, are formed at the early stage of diagenesis at a temperature of about 60~ 70℃.

A zeolitic bentonite, which exhibits whitish appearance and contains considerable amounts (nearly > 5%) of zeolites, frequently occurs as thin beds less than 1 m in Yeongil area. Anion adsorption properties of organobentonites modified by two cationic polymers, hexadecyltrimmethylammonium (HDTMA) and cetylpyridinum (CP), were investigated. The organobentonites showed the significant expansion of basal spacing to 42.0 Å at room temperature. The adsorption experiments were conducted for the 0.2 g of organobentonites with 40 mL solutions of various concentrations of anions such as nitrate, sulfate and phosphate. As a result, the organobentonites showed excellent adsorption capacities for those anions whereas untreated bentonite showed very low adsorption capacity. The surface chemical properties of aqueous kaolinite and halloysite were studied using a potentiometric titration experiment and a computer program FITEQL3.2. Among the surface complexation models a constant capacitance model was selected for this study. The 2 sites - 3 pK_(as) model, in which the surfaces were assumed to have tetrahedral and octahedral sites, was reasonable for the description of the experimental data. The surface charges of both minerals were negative above pH of 4. The higher the pH, the lower the proton surface charge densities of both minerals. The ≡SiO^- site played an important role in cation adsorption in acid and neutral pH range; whereas the ≡AlO^- site was in an alkaline pH range. The optimized intrinsic constants of kaolinite, pK_(a₂(si))^(int), pK_(al(Al))^(int), and pK_(a₂(Al))^(int) were 4,436, 4.564, and 8.461, respectively, and those of halloysite were 7.852, 3.885, and 7.084, respectively. The Osaeg hotspring (long. 128° 56`E, lat. 37° 06`N) located in the northester part of Kangwon-do, Korea. The pH value of the hot spring water is 8.31, and the EC, SO₄, F and Na are 196 ㎲/㎝, 10.88 ㎎/L, 8.19 ㎎/L, and 37.07 ㎎/L, respectively. The ocherous precipitates are precipitated on the stream bottom of Osaeg hot spring drainage. Xray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and stereo-microscope were used to analyze the precipitates. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the precipitates consist mainly of poorly crystalline materials and messelite. Many spherical and rod-shaped bacteria-like forms were observed in the precipitates.

Measurements of the lattice parameters of albite and oligoclase from electron diffraction patterns with the Au internal standard resulted in errors of less than 1%. An electron diffraction map for natural oligoclase samples was constructed and 11 stations of zone-axes diffraction patterns were obtained. This process is indispensible for reliable TEM studies of triclinic feldspars. Utilizing the {001} cleavage plane of feldspar and the double-tilting TEM holder the following information is obtainable: Si-Al ordering and chemistry of alkali feldspars could be estimated from the α^* - ν^* plot, where ν^* is measured from the [001] orientation, while α^* is measured from the [100] orientation. Si-Al ordering of Na-rich plagioclase could be estimated from ν^* in [001] patterns. Structure and chemistry of Na-poor plagioclase could be estimated from existence of e-reflections, their intensity variations as well as their positional changes.
